If by 'Shorewood', you mean Illinois, then I'm surprised the quality is so bad. Regardless, veneer plywood isn't void free, so a poor choice in a high SQ system IMO. Best to use void free Baltic Birch, Appleply or highest grade marine plywood and veneer it, though all of these look mighty fine whether clear coated or stained with just the edges veneered or laminated.

Sheesh! That room's a high SQ audio system's nightmare. What this room needs is a soffit mounted 9844 or 9845 studio monitor variant depending on ceiling height to get them away from the doors, corner and centered up with the prime listening position. Painted/veneered/wallpapered/whatever to match the wall with a ~ color matched double expanded knit grill it's as SAF compliant as practical and nothing to bump into unless you have to stoop to go through a standard height doorway.

So, before I go any further, have you bought the 416s yet? Is your ceiling high enough for a vertically oriented 416/511 combo to fit between the top of the door and ceiling? If not to both, is there enough budget for four 414s and will a wide, horizontally opposed 414-511-414 mounted between the top of the door and ceiling be SAF compliant?

I recently went from Altecs to these Martin Logan stats and the WAF was enthusiastic. I must say that my wife loved the sound and looks of the 19s we had before we moved but they weren't suitable for our new apartment.

If you can't do horns next best thing are stats.

Thanks Cris and GM, I have not set down the money yet, no. The cost of new GPA 604 with crossovers, once here on my side of the Atlantic, will be more than the 416/802/511/ + crossover of choice combo. However as you point out with regard to WAF there is still the possibility of a graceful retreat to 604?s with which I don't doubt I could live happily for many years.

GM, regrettably my ceiling is not high enough for mounting anything above the doors and I do not have ready access to a supply of 414?s at a good price.
I like the idea of a "colour matched double expanded knit grill" I could engage my wife in the endeavour and get max buy-in from her to boot as she is quite nimble with the knitting needles (or do you call the pins in english) ;)

Tom I heard M. Logan?s similar to yours years ago and was quite impressed, they however do not fare well on a low wattage diet from simple tube amps.

I do not believe the MantaRay are more expensive, but can be harder to find.
I want to try 511-horns myself, will probably have to import a pair...
(dreaming of 311-90 horns, and those lovely wooden multicells on fleabay)

Such is the way of the world, WRT material selection.
Shorewood, a suburb of Mpls./St. Paul is within easy driving distance of all the big-box stores. The store with inferior plywood was a Home Depot. Since they are 85% vendor-stocked, it's sometimes possible to buy fairly good lumber. Their selection of veneered plywood in 3/4" was pathetic, 7-9 plies of various species and, of course, the obligatory moving of the top 5+ sheets to get a finished side that was all in one piece or had any unifomity.
The hardwood supplier,Youngblood Lumber has good quality Baltic Birch. I thought I might save some mileage dealing local but ce la vie.

Quite a setup you have Arne, and right having fun and enjoying the music is the key :)
Do you cross over at 800Hz?

I did some experimenting, and found that 600-660Hz sounded good in this setup.
I have an eq with some bottom & top-end lift, but could still use a sub, and maybe a supertweeter.
